NSS Units of Dev Samaj College of Education, Sector-36 B, Chandigarh organised a one week programme ‘ SWAYAM: Self- defence First Step to Safety’ from 6th June to 12th June, 2022. Keeping in view the rising number of crimes against girls in the country, it is important to provide self-defence training to them in the schools to ensure their safety and security. Self defence training techniques instills self confidence amongst girls and helps to promote girls education particularly their transition to secondary and higher secondary level and to reduce the dropout rate in schools.Mr. Balram Malik, the head trainer from tSpecial Police Unit, spoke largely on the kind of violences that is committed against women. She narrated some instances related to Domestic Violence, Dowry, Cruelty by husband & in-laws, Sexual Harassment in public, private, or the workplace, Stalking, Obscene Calls that comes to the Special Police Unit for assistance. She pointed out why it is necessary to attend and train oneself with this kind of workshop and training programmes. She said that having knowledge about self defence techniques not only helps defend but also it builds confidence in oneself. She gave advice and tips to our girl students on how to avoid situations and circumstances that may lead to unwanted/untoward incidents.
