The Eco Club, NSS Units and Internal Quality Assurance Cell of Dev Samaj College of Education, Sector-36 B in collaboration with Department of Environment UT Administration, Chandigarh celebrated “3rd World Bicycle Day” on 3rd June 2021. The principal, Dr. (Mrs.) Agnese Dhillon was the chief patron of the event. The bicycle as a symbol of human progress and advancement "promotes tolerance, mutual understanding and respect and facilitates social inclusion and a culture of peace." The bicycle further is a "symbol of sustainable transport and conveys a positive message to foster sustainable consumption and production, and has a positive impact on climate." World Bicycle Day is now being associated with promoting a healthy lifestyle for those with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
The Principal, Dr. (Mrs.) Agnese Dhillon to commemorate the occasion, honored the staff members who arrived college on bicycle as well as the students and faculty members who shared their videos riding the bicycle. Mrs. Charanjit Kaur, organizing secretary then shared the benefits of riding a bicycle. She highlighted the health benefits of regular cycling such as increased cardiovascular fitness, increased muscle strength and flexibility, improved joint mobility, decreased stress levels, improved posture and coordination, strengthened bones, decreased body fat levels, prevention or management of disease, reduced anxiety and depression. The discussion was followed by an interactive session with all the participants and a motivational music was played to encourage the students. Not only this, poster-making and slogan-writing competitions were also organized wherein the students actively participated and displayed their creativity. They also sent a two-minute video of riding a bicycle along with their entries. E-certificates were given to the winners and participants.
The event came to a close with the Principal, Dr. (Mrs.) Agnese Dhillon appreciating the coordinators of the event, Dr. Anita Nangia and Dr. Seema Sareen and the organizing secretaries and NSS Programme officers, Mrs. Charanjit Kaur and Dr. Harpreet Kaur for successfully organizing the event. She also motivated the participants to ride bicycle everyday in order to save the environment and keep it clean and green.
